The well-known preserved body is located at Palermo, Sicily in the historic site of the Catacombs of the Capuchins. The mummy child is considered as one of the most successful product of embalming the world has ever witnessed, even beating that of Egypt’s thousand-year old mummies.
She died at 1920 and almost 100 years later, the body remained perfect and intact. In fact if you were to go and visit her tomb which is enclosed in a glass coffin, it would appear as if she was just sleeping and would wake up at any moment. Because of this, she was renowned as ‘Sleeping Beauty’.
Research suggests that she was just two years old when she died of pneumonia. Her father, Mario Lombardo, was in deep mourning from the loss of his child. He contacted the best embalmer in Europe named Alfredo Salafia to preserve Rosalia’s body. In those days, Salafia was already known as a great embalmer but when he died in 1933, he took the secrets of his embalming formula to the grave with him.
Almost a hundred years later, Rosalia is proven to be Salafia’s best masterpiece ever. As a matter of fact, in the 8,000 bodies resting at the catacombs, Sleeping Beauty’s tomb is the one most visited and admired.
However, this is not the only thing that draws people. What attracted controversy is the creepy rumour that Rosalia’s eyes still blink. This issue grew even more interesting when a time-lapse of over two hours showed the gradual opening and closing of the mummy’s eyes. This unusual phenomenon draw a lot of speculations as the years go by.
Several years later, one man seemed to have figured out the mystery behind this. According to Dario Piombino-Mascali, curator of the Catacombs of the Capuchins, the answer to the intriguing issue is quite simple. The phenomenon can be explained with the position of the coffin and the light that enters through the side windows which may be subjected to changing thus giving the optical illusion that Rosalia’s eyes are blinking.
Mascali also added that Sleeping Beauty’s eyes were never closed, so people can still see her blue eyes within.

Whether the explanation is true or not, the important thing is that the people appreciates the beauty of Rosalia Lombardo. How about you? Watch this video below and tell us what you think!
